Gay Santa Barbara's flags
will fly on State Street
June 5 to June 12, 2006 Adopt A Flag
|
For the first time in the city’s history, the “Bent Rainbow” flag will fly at 125 locations throughout downtown Santa Barbara. For nearly six years, Charles Rice, Executive Director and Founding Board Member of GaySantaBarbara.org (GSB) worked relentlessly to open up calendar slots for numerous other local non-profits and secure their own space in the State Street Flag Program. GSB’s flags are finally scheduled to fly from June 5th through 12th and help to commemorate June as Gay & Lesbian Heritage Month.
Among GSB’s all-volunteer community programs promoting gay-friendly cultural and business activities, GaySantaBarbara.org is producer of the 17th Annual Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Celebration, “The secret is OUT… Pride at the Beach is back!” scheduled for May 12th 2007. The organization also hosts the GSB Business Network, with a directory of over 200 local gay-owned and gay-friendly businesses.
The late Paul Mills, GSB’s 1st Vice President and original force behind the Flags on State project, designed the “Bent Rainbow” flag. The design pays tribute to the Chromatic Gate, the huge and welcoming rainbow(ish) sculpture on Cabrillo Boulevard. The colors acknowledge GSB’s involvement in the global Gay Celebration movement. In order to offset the cost of this nearly $10,000 project, GSB has implemented the Adopt-a-Flag Program, providing community members and business owners the opportunity to both support GSB’s charitable efforts and to own a 4’ x 6’ flag and/or a gold “Bent Rainbow” lapel pin.
